Perth alternative funk rock outfit SCIZZORMAN are back with “Mystical Yeast,” an adventurous new single that offers another glimpse into their upcoming concept album, How To Get Your Life Right With What’s Left. Packed with infectious grooves, psychedelic textures, and the band’s trademark sense of humour, the track proves that after two decades together, SCIZZORMAN remain as fearless and creatively driven as ever.
Emerging from one of the world’s most isolated cities, the band have built a sound that’s impossible to pin down. Drawing from funk, neo-psychedelia, glam pop, progressive rock, soul, and experimental music, SCIZZORMAN have always embraced artistic freedom over convention. Led by songwriter and drummer Terry J Vinci, the group continues to create music entirely on its own terms, blending technical musicianship with an adventurous spirit.
Running just under five minutes, “Mystical Yeast” transforms everyday frustrations and modern gossip culture into something far more imaginative. Beneath its irresistible funk rhythm lies a playful journey into a surreal world where ordinary concerns fade away, replaced by colourful imagery, rich instrumentation, and a sense of joyful escapism.
The song began to take shape in late 2024 after Terry overcame a lengthy period of writer’s block during several creative trips to Melbourne. A fresh environment helped reignite his songwriting, allowing both the music and lyrics to develop naturally.
Recording sessions began soon after bassist Cody Robson returned to Perth in early 2025. With Page Six Studios preparing to relocate, the band quickly captured the rhythm section, inspired by the unmistakable chemistry of Flea and Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Engineer Adrian Vinci recorded the performances in only a handful of takes, preserving the raw energy that now drives the single. Terry later added lead vocals, while guitarist Stewart Herbertson expanded the arrangement with soaring guitar work, synthesizers, vocal harmonies, an eastern-inspired instrumental passage, and one of the track’s standout solos.
Produced by SCIZZORMAN and engineered by Adrian Vinci, “Mystical Yeast” showcases the chemistry that only longtime collaborators can create.
Since forming in 2005, SCIZZORMAN have steadily built an impressive catalogue. Their self-titled debut earned national recognition through the Music Oz Awards, Awake to Dream expanded their musical palette with folk, punk, and jazz influences, while Buried Pleasures found success on US college radio. Their 2018 single “Beautiful Child” also received strong radio support across Canada and the United States.
Now returning with renewed energy following a post-pandemic creative reset, SCIZZORMAN are preparing to unveil How To Get Your Life Right With What’s Left, a concept album that promises bold ideas, inventive songwriting, and the genre-defying creativity that has become their trademark. With “Mystical Yeast,” the band once again reminds listeners that great music often comes from artists willing to ignore the rules and fully embrace their imagination.
