Rising Reading trio doops release the new single ‘everything’s fine’ (27th June). Released via the freshly launched DIY imprint Hot Earth Records (HER001), the track offers another radiant, beguiling example of the band’s Psychedelic-Post-Punk sound.
Following openings for Opus Kink, Do Nothing and Plantoid, the band has already established itself as one to watch into the release of new material.
Jagged, fuzzy, and unapologetically spacey and hypnotic, ‘everything’s fine’ is as comparable to Pink Floyd as it is to Shame and Radiohead. Thematically, the track wrestles with the monotony and compromise of modern working life. Driven by angular dual-guitar lines, drifting reverb soaked vocals, and a palpable sense of suspense and anticipation the track blends brooding melancholy with an undercurrent of raw energy.
Relying on well orchestrated dynamics and melodic shifts, the track flourish with bursts of intensity which cut through the more ethereal moments of the track before ending with an explosive climax of cymbal heavy drums and sprawling guitar work.
Lyrically more direct than previous releases, frontman Andy strips away metaphor to speak plainly on adult disillusionment, responsibility, and what it means to simply “be fine” in a world of broken promises and creeping burnout.
“This one came out of frustration,” says Andy. “It started as an instrumental with a floating fourth member, Cameron, and grew into something that felt true to us. Lyrically, it’s more straightforward than anything we’ve done. It’s about growing up—not the rose-tinted version, but the version where you’re making hard choices and realising ‘just fine’ might be the best we get. That can be okay. It can even be beautiful.”
Produced by acclaimed engineer Shuta Shinoda (Ghostpoet, Anna Meredith, Spiritualized, Hot Chip, Daughter) and recorded by Spencer Withey (Ladylike) at Farm Road Studios, ‘everything’s fine’ sees doops lean into their most refined sound yet. The band also took the reins for mixing and mastering — opting for a DIY finish over big-name polish.
doops have earned national attention with multiple plays from Radio X (John Kennedy) and consistent support from BBC Introducing. Support from the likes of DIY’s (Neu Playlist), Rough Trade’s (Counter Culture), Post-Brexit Pop and New British Rock has seen the band earmarked as an exciting prospect, while live, they’ve shared bills with rising UK acts such as Opus Kink, Do Nothing, Divorce, English Teacher, Big Special and Heartworms, playing venues including Brixton Windmill as well as appearing at a number of major UK festivals.
