Australian indie artist Mitch King has built a career on passion, perseverance, and a deep love for music. From his early days busking on the streets of Tamborine Mountain to touring nationwide, Mitch has carved out a unique space in the industry with his one-man-band performance style, seamlessly blending guitars, drums, harmonica, and vocals into a captivating live experience.

In this interview, Mitch shares his journey as an independent musician, the challenges of the industry, and his creative process. He also opens up about the uplifting themes in his music, the balance between magic and persistence in songwriting, and his aspirations to take his sound to Europe and the United States in the coming years.

Join us as we dive into the world of Mitch King, an artist who proves that passion and dedication can turn a dream into reality.

Can you tell us about your journey as an indie musician? What inspired you to pursue a career in music?

I first started playing music at 14, and by the time I was 15, I was busking on Gallery Walk, a busy street in my hometown of Tamborine Mountain. I earned enough money to skip the regular job and focus on music. Over time, busking led to paid shows, festivals, and touring Australia. No matter the financial side, I’ll always keep playing music because it’s what I love.

How would you describe your unique style and sound as an artist? What sets you apart from other musicians?

I play solo as a one-man show, combining kick and snare drums, tambourine, electrified harmonica, various guitars, and singing all at once. Not everyone can pull off the one-man band thing, so maybe that sets me apart a little when performing live. People often get engaged watching me because there’s so much going on at the same time, and they’re left wondering how I coordinate all my limbs—hahaha

Could you share some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as an indie musician and how you overcame them?

One day you may play a huge show to a few thousand people and feel on top of the world, and the next week, you may be playing a sleepy pub show. It’s quite uneven how success can come and go, and sometimes you can get disheartened. But I think if you’re playing music for the right reasons, it helps you get through the tougher times.

What is your creative process like? How do you approach songwriting and composing music?

It’s reliant on a bit of magic and persistence when writing music. Sometimes the ideas just flow and come to you, while other times it’s a slow, chipping-away process. Each song is different, and it’s important to be consistent without forcing anything. There’s a balance to it.

Are there any particular themes or messages that you aim to convey through your music? What inspires your lyrics?

I try to create lyrics that offer value and positivity to people’s lives. Themes like positive thinking (looking at the cup half full) and freedom often come through in my music. I’m open to writing about almost anything, but I naturally gravitate toward uplifting ideas. I believe singing is a form of manifestation and affirmation, so I like to send good messages, not only to my listeners but also to myself.

What are your long-term goals as an indie musician? Where do you see yourself and your music in the next few years?

I see myself likely touring overseas in Europe and the United States , while continuing to write and record more albums.
