Following a summer of touring across the UK, Brighton Jangle-Psych quartet Hutch return with a joyous ode to childlike whimsy on ‘Rustle’.

Produced by Iggy B (Penelope Isles, Gary Numan, Spiritualized, Pleasure Inc., Elbow, John Grant), showcases the band’s signature blend of jangly guitars, angelic harmonies, and imaginative lyricism, ‘Rustle’ captures a joyous and refreshing journey into a world of innocent simplicity. Gently growing through its soft drums, tinkling bell toned keys and buoyant melodies, the band’s stylistic changes in tempo and psychedelic tendencies shine brighter than ever.

With lyricism that transports listeners to another world, through adventures involving “hopping on a zebra” and watching “the moon bubble up like a frying pan”, the band’s lyricism is built around the magic, surrealism and beauty of nature and moreso, being a human – capturing a sense of optimism and serenity while offering a much welcome escapism from the modern world.

Speaking about the single, Hutch explains: “We wrote the song in lockdown, dreaming of days where we’d be enjoying the sun with friends out in nature. ‘Rustle’ became this fictional child that would be the version of us who went and had these adventures while we were stuck at home, and then come back to tell us about all the fun they had gotten up to. It made days stuck inside and away from new experiences feel a little easier.

The name ‘rustle’ came from my obsession at the time with Arthur Russell, but I thought it was funny that his name wasn’t spelt like the action ‘to rustle’, and I vowed to name a future child I had Rustle, after the verb.

The song then largely was left untouched for a few years, as Hutch started gigging and we started to take a different direction with the music. I think it was for a show in Nottingham, we wanted to start the set with a fun, high energy song (we were playing an afternoon set in the bar of Bodega for a festival, and wanted to try and grab the attention of whoever found themselves in the room as we started playing), and someone just said “hey what about rustle?” And so it came back into our lives. The redemption of Rustle: from not being in the set to being a song we wanted to record, that reflects the innocence and excitement of adventures and sharing them with friends.

Now, Rustle to us represents how grateful we are to be together, on this small boat full of friends hurtling down a narrow, rocky river with sunshine glistening off the surface. It’s a song that was written about being able to do exactly what we are doing now; a reminder to be grateful to be spending time with your best friends.”

Since their debut EP Smile and Wave, Hutch has garnered significant national attention, with radio play on BBC Radio 6 Music (New Music Fix & Amy Lamé), Radio X (John Kennedy), and playlist features on Spotify. Their music has also been celebrated by the likes of So Young, NME, Fader, Shindig! and Hard of Hearing, while their live performances have seen them tour across the UK and open for with notable acts including WITCH, The Last Dinner Party and Grammy-nominated producer Gitkin, in addition to gracing major festivals such as The Great Escape, 2000 trees, dot2dot and Victorious.
