Nashville country artist Sarah Hardwig is turning a painful breakup into a confident goodbye with her new single, “You Lied,” now available on all major digital streaming platforms. Following her national television appearance on America’s Got Talent Season 21, Hardwig returns with a song that brings together the attitude of early 2000s country with her own sharp and playful songwriting.
“You Lied” begins with the kind of hindsight that often comes after a relationship ends. Hardwig looks back at the warning signs she failed to notice, singing, “I should’ve seen all the red flags in front of me / I never thought you would leave me or ever cheat.”
But this is not a song about sitting around wishing an ex would come back. Hardwig quickly turns the story around, making it clear that she has already moved on. “No, I don’t miss all the attention that you never gave / Cause like you, I can find someone to take your place,” she sings, giving the song its confident edge.
The chorus leans into the idea of deception, using magic tricks and illusions as a clever way of describing a relationship built on lies. What she once believed was something special slowly reveals itself to be something very different. “I saw you as a shining light, but you were blinding bright,” she sings before arriving at the song’s central realization: “Thought you had nothing to hide / Truth is you lied.”
Hardwig carries that confidence into the second verse, where she refuses to allow the failed relationship or the talk surrounding it to define her. “You’re just a fairytale that can’t tell real from fantasy / You treat me like a princess, but I’m the queen,” she sings, turning familiar fairytale language into a statement of self-worth.
By the bridge, there is little left to hold back. Hardwig delivers a blunt final message to the ex before returning to the chorus and its simple conclusion: the truth eventually came to light.
The release follows a major moment in Hardwig’s career. Her appearance on America’s Got Talent Season 21 saw her perform Lainey Wilson’s “Heart Like a Truck” and receive four yes votes from the judges, introducing her music and personality to a national television audience.
A graduate of Belmont University’s songwriting program, Hardwig has spent years building her career in Nashville. She has performed the National Anthem more than 350 times, including at the 2022 Music City Bowl at Nissan Stadium, and has appeared at venues including the Bluebird Cafe and Listening Room Cafe.
Hardwig won the 2023 Tennessee Songwriters Week Showcase and has received Danny Awards recognizing musicians with disabilities. She has also shared stages with LOCASH, Charles Kelley of Lady A, Lauren Alaina and Steven Tyler, with whom she performed a duet that later went viral online. In 2024, she made her debut at the Grand Ole Opry.
With “You Lied,” Sarah Hardwig turns a story about betrayal into one about knowing your worth. It is fiery, playful and unapologetic, giving listeners another glimpse at the songwriter and performer she is becoming.
