I had the prerogative and pleasure to interview fast rising talented singer-songwriter, Kelsey Hickman, who has just released her highly anticipated single, “Novocaine.” Kelsey is a captivating performer, known for her magnetic stage presence and versatile vocal range that effortlessly weaves rock and country tones together to tell a creative story. Her latest single, “Novocaine,” is a passionate depiction of love as addiction, with powerful lyrics that capture raw emotion and resonate with listeners. Kelsey worked with renowned producer Don Miggs on the project, resulting in a slow-burn masterpiece that showcases her artistry and vocal delivery.
Kelsey’s music career began when she was just 12 years old, writing her first song while her parents were out for the night. She later became the lead singer of the Midwest band Still Kickn’, opening for notable artists like Lady A, Chris Young, and Montgomery Gentry. Despite facing challenges like her parents’ divorce, Kelsey’s dedication to her craft never faltered, and she eventually embarked on a solo career, releasing her debut single “Gone” and full-length album Gypsy in 2016 with producer Kent Wells.

Can you tell us about your journey as a musician, from writing your first song at age 12 to working with producer Kent Wells and releasing your debut single “Gone”?
I’ve always had a passion for singing, performing, and creating. Once I moved to Nashville, I knew I wanted to start releasing music. I was lucky enough to start my journey with Kent Wells. He was great. He was able to bring to life what I had in my head. I’m not that girl anymore, but at the time, it was perfect.
What inspired you to pursue a career in music, and who were some of your biggest musical influences growing up?
My biggest influence had to be Shania Twain. I knew every word to every song!
The lyrics of “Novocaine” depict love as addiction. Can you expand on this message and how it relates to your personal experiences?
Being addicted to someone who is bad for you sucks. Let me tell you! Especially when you allow them to hurt you, and sometimes they don’t even know they are doing it.
Can you tell us more about the inspiration behind your latest single, “Novocaine”?
Once I heard the song, I knew I wanted to sing the hell out of it! It’s about losing your shit and getting it all out there. Shouting how you feel from the rooftops!
What was it like working with producer Kent Wells, who has worked with Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, and Kenny Rogers?
It was wild at first because you walked in and saw all these gold albums. I felt at home, lol. I couldn’t wait to get my own gold album!
What do you hope to achieve through your music, and how do you connect with your listeners through your performances?
I want them to know it’s okay to be vulnerable. It’s ok to feel all the feels.
Can you talk about your time as the lead singer of the Midwest band Still Kickn’ and some of the highlights of your career with the band?
The highlight was opening for Lady A when I was 17. Kinda crazy. The energy on stage was something I will always crave and continue to do!
What inspired you to embark on a solo career, and how has it been different from being part of a band?
Not that different. I was always the front person. And honestly, even though it’s my name. The band and I are a team. I couldn’t do any of it without them.
Can you describe your approach to songwriting and how you strive to connect with your listeners through your music?
I’m genuine and very transparent. What you see is what you get. I want them to feel safe and content when hearing my music! Once again, it’s okay to be vulnerable.
What can fans expect from you in the near future, and are there any upcoming projects or performances that you’re particularly excited about?
I’m just excited to release all the music I can!! Kelsey train is rollin!!
